The problem

Field Notes had a growing archive of ambitious stories, but the reading experience treated every article as a similar-sized tile in an increasingly noisy feed.

The publication’s strongest work was getting lost among generic recommendations, crowded category pages, and inconsistent story packaging. Readers came for depth, but the interface kept nudging them toward speed and surface-level discovery.

The solution

We introduced a clearer editorial rhythm, giving featured stories room to breathe while making the archive easier to browse by subject, mood, and depth.

A restrained typographic system, richer story previews, and small signals for reading time created a more intentional path through the publication. The result feels less like a feed and more like a carefully edited desk of work worth spending time with.
